SOUTH PACIFIC is a popular musical that can definitely be tagged as being one of the greatest musicals in the history. The music is simply awesome and has been given by the talented Richard Rodgers. The lyrics have been penned by Oscar Hammerstein II whereas the book has been given by both Hammerstein and Joshua Logan. Severa of its musical numbers have managed to make it big all across the world. Some of these hit singles include the songs "Bali Ha'i," the popular "I'm Gonna Wash that Man Right Outta My Hair," the catchy "Some Enchanted Evening," "Happy Talk," the infectious "Younger than springtime," and last but not the least "I'm in Love with a Wonderful Guy."
The story of this musical has been set in the island paradise and has been set in the times of the Second World War
It tells the story of two couples side by side that are threatened by the dangers of both prejudice and the prevalent war. Nellie, that is the character of a spunky nurse who comes from Arkansas, falls head over heels in love with a mature planter named Emile of French origin. Nellie comes to learn the fact that the mother of his children had been an island native and owing to the fact that she is not able to turn her back on all the prejudices that she had to deal when she had been growing up, she refuses to accept Emile's proposal of marriage. In the meantime these same feelings that are preventing Nellie to accept Emile’s proposal are also stopping Lt. Joe Cable into denying him a lovely future that he could have with an innocent Tonkinese girl that he loves. Emile is eventually recruited in order to accompany Joe on a mission that is not only dangerous but eventually will also result in affecting the lives of many.
“South Pacific” has been set in a world of black and white (which is a reference to not only the understanding of both good and bad but also of the progressive racial themes. There is a startling difference between this play “South Pacific” and the “Bengal Tiger.” The main characters as has been aforementioned are hat of a rugged French plantation owner named Emile de Becque (played by Gilfry) and Nellie Forbush (played by the talented Cusack), a Navy nurse who hails from the Little Rock in Arkansas.
Some of the songs that are much popular are Nellie’s “A Cockeyed Optimist” and Emile’s song titled “Some Enchanted Evening,” that manages to express a love that does not require any kind of elaboration in order to feel genuine. This modern musical tends to rely on not only elaborate sets and also special effects. Get your cheap south pacific tickets before they sold out.
